My Iridescent vases are an outgrowth of my painting background.( Oils and watercolors silly, not houses. Although I have slapped my fair share of house paint around. And you should hear my theory of how Cubism grew out of lawn mowing... Oops, sorry, I digress.) Anyway, each of the vases is sort of a 3-D canvas upon which I am painting with precious metal oxides, flames and acids. This whole process is a rather fascinating watch, as the colors "Develop" near the end of the work, sort of like a photograph develops. My production of these vases is very limited. I only make them for a couple of weeks each year, in the summer, as it takes a major reorganization of my studio to do them. I do not have total control over the colors the glass develops. Some control. Not total. This is part of what I love about these pieces. They also are one of the few pieces of glass that are particularly nice away from bright light. They actually look better in the shadowy corner of a room than in sunlight !?!?
